After reading the introduction to Let My People Go Surfing, it's clear to me how and why Patagonia began. The biggest take away that I got from the reading was that passion leads to a lot of things. As seen in the book Patagonia started with someone having a passion for being active and then branched out to people having a passion for doing something active. In this case, it was climbing, and challenging themselves with outdoor physical activities. This passion then led to them creating a business that not only benefited them economically but also funded their passion. They wanted to have the best equipment for climbing, but also provide the best new technology for others who shared the same interest. As the business went on there were a lot of problems that were faced, one of the biggest was resource-wise, and how their company manufactures were hurting the world. They then focused their ideas on making their company's name have a purpose and allow people to know that their company is tackling social/political problems around the world. One of the most controversial and biggest topics discussed is global warming. I find it cool how they wanted to have the best equipment in the market, which would attract more people to the company thus allowing others to also get invested in the problems that surround them. Overall the journey of Patagonia was very difficult and the company had many turns in design and products and new traditions were replacing old ones thus made it risky for the company. It's crazy how a passion can become your career, which can only be a positive trend because you enjoy what you're doing and can help others enjoy it as well.
